7.9 Types of Three-Phase Transformers

Similarly in a three-phase transformer we also mainly find: Core, Low Voltage windings, main channel, High Voltage winding. Depending on the design features, the three-phase transformer can have three independent magnetic cores (Fig. 7.22).

Other types of three-phase transformers use a single magnetic core to reduce magnetic core, reducing weight among others (Fig. 7.23).

We can arrange a three-phase transformer, using the same components: the core, primary, and secondary windings, and insulation, but with different design (Fig. 7.24).

By making the star or delta connections to the primary and secondary electrical windings, we obtain a three-phase transformer. To build the bench, three identical single-phase transformers must be used.

The main advantage of a three-phase core transformer is economical. It is important to highlight that a single housing must enclose all magnetic cores. Therefore, if we use three different housings for three single-phase transformers, we employ more iron if we only use one that contains a three-phase transformer (even if it has a larger size). The disadvantage lies in having a spare unit for replacement in case of failure. This is because it is much cheaper to have a spare fourth single-phase transformer than to duplicate a three-phase transformer.
