Changing Leadership Landscape
Changing Leadership Landscape
For many centuries, warrior kings and, to some extent, spiritual leaders were the primary movers of the socio-economic structures of countries. The ownership of farms, trades and businesses was small or limited to small geographies and the owners were largely dependent upon the kings to conduct their businesses. Until the middle of the 18th century, agriculture was a predominant occupation in most parts of the world. Governance by kings, nobles or zamindars impacted the produce and income from agriculture. In Europe, religious leaders were held in high esteem and looked upon for guidance. As a result, they had a significant influence on monarchies or other forms of government. Popes, priests, mullahs, gurus, maharajas and emperors were the leaders who shaped the thinking of the society and created frameworks for law and order as well as socio-economic policies. In some parts of the world, sea voyages and the volume of long-distance commerce had increased, largely on the strength of colonisation and human trading. In some locations, guild-based production, training and collective bargaining began to gain momentum. Medieval European guild leaders determined standards for production, defined terms for acceptance of new members and nurtured talent and mastery of craftsmanship through apprenticeships and strict hierarchies rooted in tradition and trade ethics.
Feudal systems and rule by fear were by and large common, and intellectual calibre or merit was not considered an essential prerequisite for leadership. Thus, leadership assumed legitimacy by way of tradition, inheritance or physical force. Tribal and community leaders in Africa, Native America and Asia maintained social order through patriarchal leadership stemming from age and lineage. Kings granted lands to nobles and zamindars who not only safeguarded the interests of their masters but also acted as conduits to the welfare of the citizens. While nobles often acted as warrior leaders, defending territories and maintaining order, in India, we also witnessed warrior leaders like Shivaji who could inspire the masses to be part of his army for the protection and expansion of his territory.
