1 Evolution of Leadership Contours
Leadership has been the quintessential element for the progress of humanity. Every positive and negative dimension of society has been shaped by leaders who have left their imprints on the sands of time, and the future will also be defined by the leaders of today. In the early days of the evolution of communities, leaders were restricted in their sphere of influence to small territories and were constrained in their ability to transmit their ideas across vast regions due to limited transportation and communication possibilities. However, with the advancement in communication technologies, means of transport and the globalisation phenomenon, leaders can be heard, understood, followed and shaped by forces from around the world. Some inherit the role of a leader, and others achieve it through education, exposure, aspirations, opportunities and, sometimes, unexpected circumstances. Leaders of businesses and communities are expected to develop their vision, articulate the vision with the immediate communities and work collaboratively with the stakeholders to translate that vision into action. The hallmark of successful leaders is their ability to inspire and influence the stakeholders to achieve the goals. This would require the leader to possess excellent communication skills, charisma and the technical capabilities that are required to make the mission a success. The key metric for leadership success is the rate of achievement of goals. There could be various dimensions in which leadership could be assessed in terms of its effectiveness—scope, scale, complexities addressed, distinctiveness, associated risk-taking ability, cost versus outcomes, impact, growth and longevity, to name a few. Leadership has to be rooted in ethics, empathy and integrity and is judged for its resilience, innovation and ability to adapt and thrive even in the most challenging environment. Leaders should be able to build successful future leaders and are expected to foresee as well as create the future. Use, adoption or invention of the right tools, technologies and processes would be critical ingredients for success for leaders from all walks of life.
